How The Lessons Work

I teach in person piano lessons in my studio in Encinitas. I also teach one on one lessons by phone. Your choice.

My students can choose from classical, jazz, rock, pop, blues, and more.

Many students learn from youtube videos from around the world. I can help you make sense of whatever you’re working on, from any source. I can also introduce you to my own methods of teaching. Or you can take piano lessons in a more traditional way, if you prefer.

The first piano lesson is always free.  Beginners are welcome. Don’t be overwhelmed. Everyone starts somewhere. We’ll start where you’re comfortable, even if it’s just finding middle C on the keyboard. Email me to arrange a lesson time. For the first lesson, there’s no charge and no obligation.

Above, you can see two measures of music I wrote. The right hand plays a blues riff. The left hand plays jazz chords. And it’s all written using classical music theory, in what’s called standard notation.

As a composer, I can write out customized sheet music with my notation software for each student I teach. I can then email your sheet music lesson to you for you to print. My customized music writing works for students taking lessons in person or by phone.

At the request of a piano student, I can write an arrangement or suggest fingering.

Or you can play with no sheet music at all. You don’t need to read music. A lot of people play beautifully without reading music. I’m classically trained and I also play “by ear”.

All of the music above is music I’ve arranged or edited for students with my music notation software.

A few of my students study AP music theory with me. Some students are singers, learning to accompany themselves. Some are songwriters or composition students. If what you want to learn has something to do with the piano, I can probably help you up to the next level.

Email me to arrange a free lesson.

Rates

45 minutes, $63, a usual 4 week month totals $252
60 minutes, $84, a usual 4 week month totals $336

My students pay one month in advance. A canceled lesson can be made up or the amount of the pre-paid lesson can be credited forward.

My cancelation policy requires 24 hours advanced notice by phone or email, not text. The 24 hours cancelation allows me to schedule a student waiting for a make up lesson time into your spot.

Only lessons canceled with 24 hours notice can be made up or the amount of the lesson can be credited towards the following month. Same day cancelations will be charged.

You must cancel a lesson with at least 24 hours notice to receive credit.

Music Theory

American music is based on chords. It just is. You can write a song that’s primarily rhythmic or melodic, but it’s the harmonic structure that determines the scales you choose for improvisation. Harmonic structure is the classic term for what we often refer to as the chord progression. The chords usually provide us with our most fundamental understanding of a song’s architecture. And good memorization skills, jamming, and reliable performance flow from that basic knowledge.

I teach theory for all instruments from the piano. Major triads and their inversions are a pretty good start.

Chord charts show the rudiments, but that’s not really the way the song you’re trying to play sounds. It’s more nuanced than playing a chord in root position with all the notes. Which notes of a chord do pros leave out and why? And pros add notes that aren’t written down. 7th, 9th, #11 chords (sharp eleven chords)… I can help you sort it out.

Classical theory too. I tutor high school and college students in music theory classes. Start-up keyboard players in garage bands need to figure out pentatonic and blues scales for Pop, Rock, and Blues songs. Advanced jazz students can study Melodic Minor Theory and how it branches into Lydian Dominant Hexatonic Theory and Altered Hexatonic Theory. Add to that,  Diminished Scale Theory and you’ll have a broad overview of functional harmony in modern jazz. Good improvisation, song writing, and composition depend on knowing chords and the scales that generate them.

No need to get lost in the clouds. There are simple approaches to playing music that are much easier than all the stuff mentioned above. Don’t be overwhelmed. We’ll start in your comfort zone.

I always provide a free lesson with no obligation to continue. Just email me to get started. Advanced players and beginners are welcome!
